People search helps you find email addresses, phone numbers,
and Web pages of KU faculty, staff, and students listed in the
KU online directory.
This allows you to search for people and organizations by name or by email
address. What you type in the name field will be broken up into words and
People Search will search for an entry which contains all of those words.
Case does not matter. A word may be contained within part of a name or email
address. For instance, "smith" would also find "Arrowsmith", "john smith"
would find "Albert Smith Johnson". See the
name, and
wild card section below for more details.
This allows you finer control over your search. You can search on last
and first name separately. Anything you enter in either the first or
last name fields must match the first part of the first or last name.
For instance, entering "smith" would match "Smithson", but not
"Arrowsmith".
The email field requires you to specify the user's host and username, at
least in part. Examples include smith@ku.edu, sm*@ku.edu, smith@mail.ku.edu,
smith@mail.*, etc.
The department field searches for a phrase in a department name. The
phrase must appear in the department name as given, though it may appear in
the middle of the name. Case does not matter.
If you enter information in several fields, all of them must match. Any
of these fields may contain wild cards.
How searching on names works
The name field is the legal name for a KU employee, a student, or the general
name for an organization. If the person is a KU employee, whether full-time
or student, the preferred name is displayed.
For searches, the preferred name field is used for non-students, and the
primary name is used for students. If you have a staff or affiliate appointment,
the name comes from there, even if you are a full-time student. Otherwise,
if you are a student, it comes from student data. Organization names are manually
entered into the directory.
Upper and lower case letters are equivalent in the search. Periods
and most other punctuation does not appear in the name. The only
punctuation allowed in general is comma, space, hyphen, and apostrophe.
This rule is relaxed for organization names, but it makes them harder to
find when searching.
In any search, you may use wild-card characters in the search.
The character '*' matches zero or more characters. So "johns*n" would
match "johnson" and "johnsen". (And "johnsxyzzyn", but so what?) The
text "al*y" would match "Aly" and "Albert Mooney".
You do not need to enter the entire name. Each word you
type is searched for independently and if all of the words
are included in an entry's name, it matches. Unfortunately,
there is no way to make the words match on word boundaries,
thus "smith" will also match "smithson". The examples below
may help make this clear.
-
You can enter the name as a series of words, e.g. "john smith", or
"smith john" and it will search for any name containing the text
"john" and the text "smith". The examples above would
match lines containing "Johnson", for example, or "Arrowsmith".
But it can be very useful, and it's easy to do.
-
Or you enter the last name first, followed by a comma. The words
in the rest of the name are matched as above. Note that they can
match text in the last name, so "smith, s" is equivalent to just
"smith", since "smith" contains an "s". To avoid this sort of
problem, use the last and first name fields.
This email address will be used as the registered email address for
university correspondence and will be listed in the printed directory as well
as in People Search. You may list an alias@ku.edu address if you
wish, or you may list any other address. The address does not have to be on a
KU-based server.
If you do not have an registered email address and you have an
alias@ku.edu address, that alias address will be listed. If
you have multiple aliases one of them will be listed. It's a good idea
to keep your registered email address up to date.
